The Shrine is best known for its colorful parades, its distinctive red fez, and its official philanthropy, Shriners Hospitals for Children, which is often called the "World's Greatest Philanthropy.
When Shriners of North America established the first Shriners Hospital in 1922, little did the Shriners of that time realize that their dream would grow into an international network of 22 hospitals. Shriners Hospitals were among the first specialized pediatric orthopaedic hospitals in North America.
Charitable contributions work hard at Shriners Hospitals. Shriners Hospitals for Children are at the forefront of medical treatment and research in orthopaedic, burn and spinal cord injury care. More than 800,000 young people are today able to lead better, fuller lives, thanks to the hospital and medical services we have provided. Donations are tax-deductible as provided by law.
Shriners Hospitals for Children is a network of 22 pediatric hospitals in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The hospitals provide specialized care for children under the age of 18.
Specialized hospitals provide expert orthopedic care to children. Eighteen of the 22 Shriners Hospitals specialize in orthopaedic care, with a nineteenth hospital providing orthopaedic care in addition to burn and spinal cord injury care. These hospitals treat children with problems of the bones, joints or muscles.
